Authors Crossing Borders

I can remember, a fairly long time ago when there was quite a controversy over Judy Blume’s children’s books. Blume also wrote several popular adult novels such as Wifey and it was feared that children might stumble upon these books at the library (way over in the adult department!) and heaven forbid, they’d be tainted for life!

Here we are so many years later and as the YA market continues to outgrow adult markets,  adult authors are rushing to the YA section in droves. Omar Tyree wrote 12 Brown Boys. Alisa Valdez-Rodriguez wrote Haters. NiNi Simone is TuShonda Whitaker, an adult urban lit author. Marina Budhos crossed into YA as did Yasmin Shiraz and Reshonda Tate Billingsley.

Rather than fear, I think today we see a great deal of versatility in these authors as the flex their skills to reach new readers. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.
